Brainwaves and Breakthroughs: Our Multimodal Neuromonitoring Workshop

Multimodal Neuromonitoring Workshop
Philadelphia, PA || January 11-12, 2023

For the first two weeks in January, we were delighted to host Dr. Peter Smielewski and Dr. Erta Beqiri from the Cambridge Brain Physics Lab. Over the past two decades, Peter and Dick Moberg developed the two leading products for multimodal neuromonitoring: ICM+ for research and the CNS Monitor for clinical use. In contemplating the visit, the two decided to host a two-day workshop on the topic highlighting both technologies and targeting neurocritical care fellows.

The meeting took place at the Moberg Analytics Intergalactic Headquarters, filled to capacity quickly, and was very successful. This workshop was held in anticipation of a much larger Multimodal Neuromonitoring Symposium to be held later this year. More news will follow on these plans.

The first day of the workshop covered the path of data from devices through each product and on to applications. The second day covered applications of multimodal data including cerebral autoregulation, quantitative EEG, and Big Data. Both days included hands-on sessions to teach device connectivity concepts and the operation of each product.

The meeting began with opening talks from both Dick Moberg and Dr. Peter Smielewski on their history in the field and vision for the future.

Moberg Research (now Micromed) provided devices for the workshop (thanks!), and Andrew Gaess (VP Sales) and Mike Meyers (Product Manager) walked attendees through the CNS Monitor and Envision.

The hands-on activities allowed the attendees to get a deeper understanding of the multimodal data path from data acquisition to data analysis. These sessions included device connectivity solutions with both the Moberg CNS Monitor and ICM+, data analysis solutions with the Moberg CNS Envision and ICM+, and cloud aggregation solutions with Moberg CONNECT.

Peter Smielweski (below, left) and Erta Beqiri (below, right) presented their work on biologic modeling in their lab at Cambridge. These technical talks provided the audience with sufficient background knowledge for complex topics such as cerebral autoregulation.

Ethan Moyer & Craig Maddux

Ethan Moyer (below, left) spoke on the concept of Big Data with respect to neurocritical care and solutions to scaling analytics on the Cloud. He also taught us how to deploy custom interoperable analytics across a distributed network of data sets using federated learning. Craig Maddux (below, right) covered how cloud-based solutions can solve many barriers for clinical trials in neurocritical care.

Feedback from the workshop is being used to plan the larger Symposium later this year. Stay tuned!

Discussion on Continuous Cerebral Autoregulation Indices in Critical Care
Philadelphia, PA || January 13, 2023

As a follow-up to the cerebral autoregulation (CAR) session at the ICP 2022 meeting in Cape Town, an international discussion meeting was held in Philadelphia to coincide with Dr. Smielewski’s visit. The organizers were Dr. Soojin Park, Dr. Marcel Aries, Dr. Erta Beqiri, and Dr. Peter Smielewski. An invitation was sent out to those clinicians who are actively using CAR in their practice. The meeting gathered 38 attendees from around the world. Feedback will be used to help move this technology forward in a consensus-based manner. We will report on further work from this group in upcoming issues.
