Our Connection to World Computer Day
My father was born within a few years of the first airplane flight at Kitty Hawk and lived to see a man walk on the moon and air travel become a way of life. Likewise, I was born a few years after the invention of the first digital computer, the ENIAC, at the University of Pennsylvania and have lived to see the profound changes computing has made to civilization. My father was a bystander watching aviation grow, but I was very much a participant in the early days of the computer, particularly microprocessors.
What started as a few random meetings and events led to my helping, at least in a small way, to start that cyclone of personal computing in the late 1970s and throughout the ’80s. It was one of the most exciting times of my life.

Today, computers have found their way into every aspect of our lives and it’s so multi-faceted that most of them are unrecognizable to me. But there was a time when you could wrap your head around a computer and understand pretty much everything about it. For me, that was the 6502 microprocessor, the one Apple used in their first computer, and the one that really changed the world. It was designed and made in the suburbs of Philadelphia and I knew a few of the designers. Likewise, I got to know the inventors of the ENIAC, met Steve Jobs and Bill Gates a few times, and many others who would be part of the revolution.

We are one of the sponsors of World Computer Day on February 15, 2022. The focus is on the 6502 microprocessor with talks from one of the original designers, Bill Mensch. These were the cowboy times of personal computers and the stories are short of miracles. I urge anyone interested in the history of innovation to tune into the talks. They are free!
