Tobias Hamman
European Sales and Marketing Manager
In the late 1990s, I started an apprenticeship in computer science. Three years later, I was managing servers, setting up networks, and, yes, that was part of it too, changing toner cartridges for elderly executive secretaries at a large pharmaceutical company in the USA.
After three years, I thought, somehow this can’t be it, so I kept looking. In the office next door was a company in the medical technology sector, and they were looking for a salesperson with some technical understanding. My boss always said I could sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo, so I started working there. After more than ten years in epilepsy monitoring and sleep diagnostics, I was tired—again—too much commercialism, too little innovation, and a lack of focus on what was truly important. I met interesting people, and more importantly, I made decisions that would change my life forever.
I consciously chose the field of multimodal neuromonitoring and took the plunge into self-employment, even though, apart from Dick, there were no advocates for it. Today, more than ten years after quitting my job and embarking on this adventure, I couldn’t be happier. When I’m working, I meet people who mean something to me and with whom I can make a difference, people for whom profit isn’t the primary motivation. And when I’m not working, I can spend time with my wonderful family: my partner Anne, my two daughters Marlene and Hermine, and our dachshund Lüthi. In the past, when I had the time, I was a passionate fisherman, and although I don’t have the time right now, I’m sure I’ll be able to indulge in this hobby again someday.
At the moment, other things are more important. I love to travel; I adore road trips. They remind me of holidays in faraway countries like New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Canada, Iceland, Norway, and so on. I love going to conferences and meeting people who are working toward a common goal. My mind is full of family, autoregulation, CPPopt, neuromonitoring, and interfaces. I really love where I am right now. I understand that I can no longer be the one who installs the servers and writes scripts, but I can help the young, dedicated colleagues understand how things work – in a world between commerce and solutions that really matter.
